Silo Fumigation Units
Silo Fumigation Units (SFU) are fitted to the underside of cone-based silos and just above ground level of straight-sided silos. The inside of the SFU protrudes into the silo and is protected with an insect-proof cap and stainless steel mesh. The outside of the silo the screw cap allows you access to the canister and open air vent.
The SFU work very well with Silo Ventilation Systems’ ‘Silo Vent’, which is a wind-driven ventilator located at the top of a silo. Together the units drawn air in from the bottom of the silo, and air is moved passively through the silo and exhausted out the top of the silo. This action reduces the build-up of heat, humidity and condensation in stored commodities.
The
NEW SFU
features heavy-duty construction with seamless fittings, thereby increasing the amount of phosphine tablets that can be added. This also means that fewer units are required for larger silos.
The number of SFUs required depends on the silo’s storage capacity:
Fumigation Chamber
The Silo Fumigation Units have a dual role. In addition to allowing airflow through the silo, they can also assist in fumigation.
They can hold a canister with chemical tablets spaced out evenly, which is inserted into the SFU and screwed air tight. At the completion of the treatment period, as per the chemical manufacturer’s recommendations, remove the end screw cap and dispose of the chemical residue in accordance with your state’s requirements for handling of chemicals. All this work is done from the safety of the ground.
Leaving the outside screw cap off after the chemical treatment period allows fresh air to be drawn in at the bottom of the silo and pass through the silo and commodity, removing any chemical residue smell, while lowering the internal temperature and humidity of the silo.
Silo Fumigation Units (SFU) are designed with the safety and health of the grain handler and the commodities and consumer in mind. Silo Ventilation Systems have designed the SFU for the grain handler to operate all chemical tablet treatments and air venting of silo at the safety of ground level. There’s no more climbing ladders to place and remove phosphine tablets from the top of a silo. Furthermore, the chemical tablets don’t come in contact with the stored commodity.
The Silo Vent product range covers sealed and non-sealed silos. There are no running costs or ongoing maintenance with Silo Vent products.
Safe Phosphine Handling
Silo Ventilation Systems have been working on improving the phosphine handling of chemicals in grain storages over the past 15 years.
Working on OH&S best practices of handling phosphine at ground level, Silo Ventilation Systems have developed a heavy-duty Silo Fumigation Units and
Fumigation Chamber
to handle the dispensing of phosphine gases by installing phosphine from the ground level.
This alleviates the need for high-risk installation of phosphine tablets using ladders to access the tops of the silos. Proven results have indicated a 2- to 3-day turnaround for gases to pass through grain from the bottom entry AIV by means of natural air convection currents.
This means that the grain is getting a better distribution of gases through the volume of grain stored.
The removal of residue from the SFU is simple from ground level and of minimal risk compared to climbing the silo ladder and having residue powder blown back into silo, directly effecting grain contamination and also human contamination.
